...court reporting procedures and technology, spelling, legal terminology, medical terminology, transcript production, court reporting ethics, CART and captioning terminology, and CAT (Computer Aided Transcription) realtime court reporting software. These are the academics commonly found on state and national certification examinations. A court reporting, broadcast captioning training program should provide the student with an externship where they work with professional realtime court reporters, broadcast closed captioners, and CART providers to obtain practical work experience. Realtime court reporting and broadcast closed captioning programs should also provide assistance in preparing for certification examinations as well as job placement.

Theory - continued:

The student should choose a training program with a state-of-the-art, modern, realtime theory, preferably with a broadcast (closed) captioning  foundation.

One home study program has already taken heed to the NCRA’s (National Court Reporters Association) findings regarding the teaching of complex theories in traditional schools and has developed a more simplified theory for home study students that has been found to be much easier to learn, much shorter, yet still meets all of the NCRA’s requirements for a realtime writing theory. This theory has already illustrated a noticeable success rate.

The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) are the leading authorities on information, statistics, and projections for the Court Reporting industry.
